LASER METAL DEPOSITION SERVICES,
BASED IN DONCASTER
Laser Additive Solutions (LAS) offers Laser Metal Deposition (LMD), also known as Laser Directed Energy Deposition (Laser DED), services for the manufacture, repair and enhancement of high-value metal components. Using both powder and wire feedstock, we can develop tailored deposition processes for a wide range of materials and applications.
HOW DOES LASER METAL DEPOSITION WORK?
Laser Metal Deposition (LMD), also known as Laser Directed Energy Deposition (L-DED), uses a focused laser beam to create a controlled melt pool while metal powder or wire is fed directly into it. The deposited material melts and metallurgically bonds to the component, allowing material to be added layer by layer to manufacture new features, build components, apply coatings or repair existing parts.
WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES OF LASER METAL DEPOSITION?
- Add material to existing components – ideal for repairs, dimensional restoration and adding new features.
- Large component capability – LMD is not restricted by a powder-bed chamber, making it suitable for significantly larger parts.
- High deposition rates – material can be deposited relatively quickly, particularly when producing larger features and near-net-shape components.
- Powder or wire feedstock – different feedstock options can be selected depending on the material and application.
- Wide material range – many steels, stainless steels, nickel alloys, cobalt alloys, titanium alloys and other metals can be processed.
- Near-net-shape manufacture – components or features can be deposited close to their final geometry before machining.
- Reduced material waste – material is deposited only where required, which can be particularly valuable with expensive alloys.
- Multi-material capability – different materials can potentially be deposited onto an existing component or varied during manufacture.
